Sneak Peek BTS of Laughing Yarns
Over on my Laughing Yarns site, I'm busy building a beginner friendly Crochet Haven. One of the first patterns I'm making for 2025 is a blanket inspired by an A.I. image. Below is the first few paragraphs of the un-posted design progress article titled "Movie Madness: Designing my AI Crochet Blanket". Enjoy.
Movie Madness: Designing my AI Crochet Blanket
Check out this A.I. image I created at NightCafe. I *must* recreate the blanket from this image!

Let’s Create This Blanket!
First, let’s look at the blanket.
The blanket in the image features a combination of warm and earthy tones, including:
- Deep red or burgundy
- Golden mustard yellow
- Muted teal or light blue
- Rich brown
- Beige or tan
The design incorporates both striped and granny square-style motifs, creating a cozy and nostalgic look. The fringe along the edges also adds to its vintage aesthetic.
Time to decide on the colors to use
Although this looks like it would work great using blanket yarn, I don't normally have any on hand. So, looking at my stash, I decided to use the following colors of Pound of Love by Lion Brand Yarn :
- Sugar Cookie
- Pumpkin Pie
- Pumpkin Spice
- Oxford Grey
- Olive

Designing The Pattern
Looking at the AI image, it looks like a center section of weird octagon granny squares, with smaller regular granny squares connecting them together. That section is surrounded by stripes. Building this blanket will be done by sections, starting with the center and then working out.
I found a wonderful octagon pattern, The 8 Sided Granny Square Sand Dollar from the JSP Create site. But I want something closer to the AI image and larger, so I decided to try to design my own. Because I have already made a few of the Sand Dollar granny squares, designing one of my own may be do-able.
As for the smaller regular granny squares, I just need to make small granny squares that are the right size. I prefer the look of the Circle in a Square grannies, so I'll just make a smaller version according the size of the octagon ones.
As for the rest of the blanket, stripes. Easy to figure the size and colors after making the center section.
Finishing will include a simple border that has tassels on each end.
